- Isana Genetics: Live Plant Macro Photography Session + Founder Chat
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Brent and Kevin, the founders of Isana Genetics, who are making waves in Maryland’s cannabis scene with a unique blend of old-school genetics and modern innovation. As OG strain hunters with the same relentless spirit as Arjan Roskam, they’re dedicated to bringing rare, landrace genetics from the farthest corners of the globe back to Maryland. Their journey is one that honors tradition while pushing the boundaries of what cannabis can be. After years of refinement, Isana Genetics offers what they call "The Isana Experience"—a potent fusion of history and forward-thinking, blending flavorful terpene profiles with authentic Maryland cannabis culture. The Art of Capturing Cannabis Essence with Precision Photography As a cannabis photographer, I’ve always believed that the smallest details can tell the biggest stories. I brought my full setup to their facility—tripod, 2x macro lens, three strobes with softboxes, a rail slider, and a remote trigger—to capture these plants in all their glory. With a focus-stacking technique, I took 40-60 images per plant at f/11, later combining them in post to create that clear, stacked look that these plants deserve. The background was a piece of black velvet, which absorbed light and created a deep, noir aesthetic that matched the rich, connoisseur vibe of Isana’s brand. The best of Isana genetics macro photography, as I photographed the plants, Brent and Kevin shared the inspirations behind their work, stories of strain-hunting adventures, and the philosophy that drives them. Each strain they develop is a story of dedication, capturing the intricate balance between honoring heritage genetics and embracing new innovations. It’s a journey that resonates with my own as a photographer—both of us striving to reveal beauty and detail that might otherwise go unnoticed. Crafting Legacy through Terpene-Driven Breeding - Isana Genetics Macro Photography Isana Genetics takes a terpene-focused approach to breeding that goes beyond aroma and flavor; it’s about creating a distinctive experience. Their five-step breeding process starts with carefully selecting parent strains based on terpene profiles, using lab results and sensory evaluations to ensure complementary blends. Through a meticulous balancing of light, temperature, and humidity, they coax out specific terpenes, often pairing strains high in limonene with those rich in myrcene to craft complex profiles with vibrant citrus notes. In the final stages, Isana refines each strain through lab testing and sensory analysis, ensuring every bud resonates with a unique aromatic quality. Their dedication to terpene enhancement isn’t just science—it’s artistry. In capturing the frosty trichomes and vivid pistils of their plants up close, I could see the results of their passion firsthand. Embracing Challenges and Connections in the Cannabis Community Running a cannabis brand in a highly competitive market comes with its own set of challenges, from funding limitations to establishing a foothold in a market dominated by well-funded West Coast brands. Brent and Kevin recognize that resilience and adaptability are key. Despite these challenges, they’ve earned a respected place in the Maryland market, partnering with local cultivators and dispensaries like Shore Natural RX, Remedy Maryland, Mana Supply Company, and Mary and Main. Their commitment to quality and authenticity has fostered a strong community around Isana Genetics. Brent and Kevin are proud of their local roots, and they view the Maryland cannabis market as an opportunity to define a unique regional identity—one that respects the traditions of cannabis while embracing the creativity that keeps the culture alive. Honoring the Past While Shaping the Future Brent and Kevin’s partnership goes back 25 years, born from a shared love for the plant and the creative potential it holds. They are constantly challenging each other to push the boundaries of what cannabis can be, learning from each new generation of strains and staying connected to both global trends and the Maryland cannabis community. Whenever they work with new genetics, they pay homage to the original breeders, ensuring that each strain retains its cultural significance. Through their breeding, they strive to create strains with a unique identity—flavors, aromas, and effects that leave a lasting impression. It’s not just about producing cannabis; it’s about contributing to a culture and crafting experiences that resonate with enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The Isana Experience: Maryland’s Distinctive Cannabis Flavor For those looking to experience cannabis in its most refined form, the Isana Experience offers something truly unique. The brand combines old-school genetics with the best of contemporary cultivation techniques to produce cannabis that’s as flavorful as it is potent. From the Maryland Leaf holiday parties to exclusive collaborations with social equity partners, Isana Genetics is deeply rooted in Maryland’s cannabis community. As I photographed these meticulously crafted plants, I could see the artistry that Brent and Kevin bring to each strain. Under the lens, the trichomes and pistils of Isana’s plants tell a story—a legacy of dedication, creativity, and a commitment to quality that reflects the best of Maryland’s cannabis culture. Key Takeaways Blend of Heritage and Innovation: Isana Genetics combines traditional genetics with cutting-edge techniques, creating strains that honor the plant’s legacy while embracing modern advancements. Terpene-Driven Breeding Process: By focusing on terpene profiles, Isana crafts strains with unique aromas and flavors, providing an elevated sensory experience. Commitment to Quality and Authenticity: Brent and Kevin prioritize authenticity, selecting strains that reflect true cannabis qualities and respecting the lineage of each cultivar. Strong Community Connections: Decades of networking allow Isana Genetics to remain connected to global cannabis trends while grounding their work in Maryland culture. Shaping Maryland’s Cannabis Identity: Through partnerships and unique strains, Isana Genetics is helping to define what Maryland cannabis can be, creating a distinctive identity in the market. For those who seek a genuine cannabis experience, Isana Genetics offers a powerful fusion of tradition, innovation, and quality. Whether through their carefully bred strains or through their community connections, Brent and Kevin are shaping the future of cannabis connoisseurship, one terpene at a time.
- Popcorn Buds & Chill - A Still Life & Collage Product Photography Test Session
I had an idea for a simple concept for "Popcorn Buds", you see these little nuggets for sale at most dispensaries and they are usually offered at a discount over the big prime grade "A" buds, they often get overlooked. With that being said, here is a simple concept test shoot I did recently focusing on the ubiquitous little nuggets of bliss paired with a popular current cultural meme (Netflix & Chill, I digress) elevating those little yet mighty buds we all love! A part of the art of photography and being a "photographer" is reflecting the cultural zeitgeist, living in the moment, awareness and being connected to a larger collective unconscious, you know the Jungian thing. I used a single 600 watt hard light placed about 10 feet away to get even lighting and the gradient look I wanted, I used a gaggle of flags, scrims, reflectors and tracing paper to shape the light to the aesthetic vision. I took this "hero shot" and then added "POP" & floating buds in post for a slightly different look and effect. These are the first images using my new camera, Sony A7R5 the 61 full frame megapixels of resolving power is super useful when paired with my trusty Sony G Master 90mm f2.8 Macro lens. I love the focus bracketing function on the new camera, I will still use my manual 2x lens for specific looks and jobs but this automated feature on the A7R5 makes my life a bit easier in delivering content to clients. Stay tuned for some photos from a studio shoot with Nature's Heritage .
- Capturing the Beauty of Nature's Heritage: A Day In The Life - Studio Photoshoot
Nature's Heritage Marketing Director was coming through town from Massachusetts and we had a day to shoot some e-commerce platform pack shots and a few still life shots. We got these images set up fairly quick and checked them off the list. Then we set up for the still life shots, the first of which is focus stacked as it was shot at a pretty extreme angle and I wanted to get all the products in focus even @ f11 Hero Shot - Cannabis Noir. I used a brand appropriate color for the backdrop and added a flash for gradient effect. We used sticky tack to keep the canisters from rolling around and I had to work the angle to get the right kind of reflections. And then we finished with the concentrates on the black acrylic, the challenge was to get some reflections and the product in the jar so the angle was kind of important, here are two different scenes. I also worked on some Henri Rousseau inspired proof of concept collages for the client that they ultimately passed on, sigh. We wrapped up in the evening after a full studio day, client was very happy so mission accomplished and some great new portfolio additions, stay tuned for more behind the scenes!
