  • The Cannabis Photography Growth Session

My journey behind the lens began in the late 80s, capturing the raw energy and authentic moments of the skateboarding scene. From there, I moved into photographing bands and promoting the underground scene, learning firsthand the impact of guerrilla marketing to connect with audiences who valued real, gritty experiences. Soon after, I co-founded a promotion company with a talented group of creatives, called Headroom Digital where we curated events with bands and DJs that people would remember. Around the same time, I played in the band Twine, signed with Ghostly International Records, and had the incredible experience of touring across Europe and America. These years taught me about connection—how to create visuals and experiences that resonate. Later, I shifted to a decade-long partnership in the wireless wholesale industry, sharpening my skills in commercial photography, marketing, and branding. When Maryland legalized medical marijuana, it was a chance to bring together everything I’d learned. I launched Maryland Connoisseur Studio, blending my fine art approach with years of business and branding experience to help shape a sophisticated visual identity for the cannabis industry. With this foundation, I now offer one-on-one coaching to help you unlock the potential of your photography, refine your skills, and develop a deeper understanding of cannabis photography. • Content & SEO Management Strategy Call

"It’s a Numbers Game" "If your Domain Authority (DA) meets the minimum threshold (20+), where Google sees you as a lower-level authority and directs 3,000 motivated visitors searching for "CBD wellness" products to your website daily from billions of keyword searches, and if your website is created with high-quality and engaging content with a seamless shopping and checkout experience, then your visitors will linger on the website much longer, increasing opportunity time to complete calls to action. And if just 3% of those 3,000 visitors make a purchase (90), and the average purchase is $200, then that translates into daily gross sales of $18,000. That is the power of investing in your website and SEO." - Greg Malcolm In today’s digital landscape, harnessing the power of the internet is key to growing your brand and connecting with your audience. • The Maryland Connoisseur Method: Elevating the Everyday with Trulieve’s Modern Flower

In the highly competitive landscape of Multi-State Operators (MSOs), the "mid-tier" market segment is the fiercest battleground. It’s the crowded center where brands fight for the everyday consumer, the volume buyers who want quality, consistency, and value. Trulieve’s "Modern Flower"  sits squarely in this critical zone. The branding is clean, contemporary, and accessible. The product is reliable. But in a sea of sameness, being "reliable" isn't enough to build strong brand equity or command loyalty. The marketing challenge for a brand like Modern Flower isn't about convincing people it exists; it's about convincing them it reflects who they want to be. It’s about moving a brand from a functional purchase to an aspirational choice. Modern Flower reframed through the Maryland Connoisseur lens—everyday cannabis elevated into a premium, editorial moment. How do you take an "everyday" product and give it a premium sheen without alienating its core base or inflating production costs? Using the  Maryland Connoisseur Method , we developed a visual strategy designed to recontextualize value. We took high-fidelity studio assets of Modern Flower, originally captured during sessions for  Maryland Leaf Magazine , and placed them into the lives of the upwardly mobile consumers Trulieve needs to capture. Sativa with a cinematic edge. Bold color blocking transforms Modern Flower into something worthy of the spotlight. Here is how we used hybrid virtual production to turn the "everyday" into the "elevated." Decoding the "Modern" Consumer Before pixel touched screen, we had to define the psychographics of the target audience. Who is the "Modern Flower" consumer? They aren't the hype-beasts chasing the rarest drops, nor are they the budget shoppers looking for the cheapest shake. They are the young professionals, the creatives, and the urbanites. They are busy, they are aesthetics-conscious, and they are upwardly mobile. The “after work unwind” reimagined. Modern Flower positioned as the choice for professionals who enjoy life with intention. They drink craft beer, they buy nice sneakers, and they curate their Instagram feeds. For them, cannabis is an accessory to a well-lived life, not the defining feature of it. The visual language had to reflect "Attainable Luxury." It needed to feel sophisticated and successful, but still grounded in reality. We needed to move the product off the dispensary shelf and into the penthouse. The Method: The Bridge Between Studio and Lifestyle This project utilized the core tenet of the Maryland Connoisseur Method: the seamless fusion of physical reality and digital ambition. We utilized high-resolution, macro-detailed studio photographs of the Modern Flower packaging and buds. Clean, graphic, and elevated—Modern Flower positioned as a design-forward brand through bold studio work. These assets, originally shot for editorial use in Maryland Leaf Magazine, provided the "truth" of the product, the crystalline structure of the trichomes, the exact texture of the mylar bag. The details matter. High-fidelity product imagery builds trust and elevates brand perception. We then built aspirational virtual environments around these real assets. This approach allows Trulieve to bypass the immense capital expenditure (CapEx) and logistical nightmare of renting high-end locations, casting models, and navigating complex compliance on-set. We focused on two distinct lifestyle narratives to prove the concept. Hybrid flower meets high-end styling—proof that mid-tier products can look premium with the right creative direction. Case Study Scene 1: The Urban Oasis (The "Work Hard, Chill Hard" Vibe) The first narrative targeted the post-work unwind. The goal was to associate Modern Flower with success and relaxation after the grind. The Scene:  We placed the Modern Flower product on a sleek, minimalist table on a high-rise rooftop terrace. The Vibe:  Evening over a bustling cityscape. It’s the moment the laptop closes.  The "Human" Element:  We introduced virtual models styled as a young professionals, stylish, relaxed, and diverse. A night out, redefined. Modern Flower as an accessory to modern living—not a commodity on a shelf. "We aren't just selling flower; we are selling the moment the flower creates. We are selling the feeling of having 'made it' to the end of the day in style." This scene recontextualizes the product. On a dispensary shelf, it's a mid-tier option. On a rooftop overlooking the city, it becomes a premium experience. It validates the consumer's choice:  Smart people who live good lives choose Modern Flower. Case Study Scene 2: The Modern Editorial (The Power Shot) For the second narrative, we moved away from "lifestyle" and leaned into "High Fashion." We wanted to prove that Modern Flower could hold its own in the pages of Vogue or GQ. The Aesthetic:  We utilized bold, graphic  Color Blocking . We matched the background environments strictly to the strain profiles: Deep, vibrant  Crimson Red  backgrounds for Sativa, and lush,  Forest Green  for Hybrid/Indica. This creates an immediate, subconscious visual cue for the consumer. Where cannabis meets couture. Sativa styled like a GQ cover to elevate Modern Flower’s brand perception. The Styling:  The "Upwardly Mobile" theme was taken to its peak. We styled the virtual models in sharp tailoring—black suits, velvet blazers, and silk lapels. This isn't stoner wear; this is power wear. The Narrative:  The model holding the red Sativa bag in a sharp tuxedo isn't just smoking; they are celebrating a win. The Lighting:  We used high-contrast, "Studio Hard" lighting. This highlights the gold jewelry on the model's wrist and the crisp white text on the Modern Flower bag. It screams "Premium." "By placing a mid-tier product in the hands of a model wearing a bespoke suit, we elevate the brand through association. It stops looking like a commodity and starts looking like a luxury accessory." The Business Case: Recontextualizing Value for ROI For Trulieve’s marketing leadership, this approach offers a strategic advantage beyond just pretty pictures. It addresses core business needs in a saturated market. Attainable luxury in motion—Modern Flower integrated seamlessly into real nightlife energy. 1. Elevating Perceived Value without Elevating Price:  By placing the product in high-end environments, we psychologically lift its price point. The consumer feels they are getting a "penthouse experience" for a "mid-tier price." This is the definition of value in the modern market. 2. Compliance & Speed to Market:  Shooting lifestyle content with cannabis in physical locations is a compliance minefield. The Maryland Connoisseur Method is "Compliance by Design." We control every pixel, ensuring zero appeal to minors and strict adherence to MCA regulations, all while generating content exponentially faster than traditional production. 3. Scalable Brand Consistency:  Once these virtual environments are built, they are assets. When a new strain drops under the Modern Flower banner, we don't need to rent the rooftop again. We simply drop the new product into the existing, pre-approved world. Trulieve's Modern Flower- Conclusion: The Modern Standard The battle for the mid-tier won't be won by price wars; it will be won by brand perception. By using the Maryland Connoisseur Method to visualize Trulieve’s Modern Flower in the hands of the upwardly mobile, we are doing more than creating content. We are creating a new standard for what "everyday cannabis" looks like.

  • The Maryland Connoisseur Method: The Alchemist Session – Transmuting Studio Light into Virtual Gold

In the ancient world, alchemy was the pursuit of turning base metals into gold. In the modern cannabis industry , the goal is strikingly similar: taking a raw material—a gram of rosin, a vape cartridge, a dab of badder and transmuting it into a brand that feels precious, desirable, and weightier than gold. For our recent collaboration with the  Alchemist  family of brands, including  The Alchemist ,  Eden Solventless , and  Equity Extracts , we faced a unique challenge. We had completed a successful, high-intensity full-day studio product shoot. The assets were stunning: high-fidelity macros of the  Fruit Gushers Duo  and sleek hardware shots of the  Equity Extracts Vape . The Alchemist aesthetic brought to life —liquid gold rosin presented with luxury, attitude, and bold contrast. But in the age of the algorithm, a folder of product shots is not a campaign. It’s an inventory list. We needed lifestyle. We needed vibe. We needed to show the human element. Using the  Maryland Connoisseur Method , we took just four "seed" images from that physical studio day and grew an entire virtual ecosystem around them. We utilized advanced virtual lighting techniques: Rembrandt, Butterfly, and Beauty Dish simulations, to seamlessly blend real glass with digital worlds. Equity Extracts captured in a moment of pure flow —golden light, smooth vapor, and a calm, elevated presence. Here is how we turned a single day of studio work into a masterclass in visual alchemy. The Genesis: The 600-Watt Sun The secret to a believable virtual composite isn't in the software; it’s in the studio. If the light on the product doesn't match the physics of the world you build, the human eye rejects it instantly. For the  Eden Solventless Fruit Gushers Duo  and the  Equity Extracts Vape , we made a deliberate technical choice during the physical shoot. We didn't use softboxes. We used a  single 600-watt strobe with a bare bulb , positioned far away from the product. "We created a miniature sun in the studio. Hard shadows, specular highlights, and zero forgiveness. This is the raw material of reality." By shooting the concentrates and vapes with this hard, directional light, we mimicked the intensity of natural sunlight or the sharp beams of a nightclub. This gave us "high-contrast assets". When we dropped these assets into our virtual environments, they didn't look like stickers; they looked like physical objects reacting to the world around them. PuffGo in action —clean vapor, soft highlights, and a modern lifestyle vibe. Decoding the Aesthetic: Three Brands, Three Lighting Personalities The Alchemist umbrella houses distinct identities. We couldn't use a "one-size-fits-all" lighting setup for the virtual models. We had to match the lighting pattern to the brand ethos. 1. The Alchemist & Eden: The "Rembrandt" Mood For the high-end concentrates and the mystical "Alchemist" vibe, we leaned into Rembrandt Lighting. Eden Solventless , framed like high-end cosmetics—pure color, clean lines, and luxury presentation. The Technique:  This classic setup creates a small, illuminated triangle on the shadowed side of the model's face. It is moody, dramatic, and artistic. The Vibe:  It implies depth and complexity. It fits the "Fruit Gushers" rosin profile—rich, flavorful, and requiring a connoisseur's palate. The deep shadows allow the gold color of the rosin (the "Philosopher's Stone" of cannabis) to pop against the dark environment. 2. Equity Extracts: The "Butterfly" Power Equity Extracts is bold. It’s about empowerment and presence. For these virtual portraits, we utilized Butterfly Lighting(also known as Paramount lighting). Equity Extracts in a golden, fashion-forward moment—smooth vapor and elevated energy. The Technique:  The key light is placed high and directly in front of the model, creating a small, butterfly-shaped shadow under the nose. The Vibe:  This is the lighting of superheroes and movie stars. It sculpts the cheekbones and emphasizes the eyes. It makes the model look powerful and focused—perfect for visualizing the uplifting, functional high of a premium vape pen. 3. The Lifestyle Polish: The Virtual Beauty Dish To bridge the gap between "edgy" and "accessible," we simulated the effect of a Beauty Dish. A refined Eden moment —bold color pops, reflective surfaces, and a confident gaze. The Technique:  A beauty dish provides a light that is crisp yet soft. It has more contrast than a softbox but wraps around the skin beautifully. The Application:  We used this for the "application" and "enjoyment" shots. It creates a "high-class sheen" on the skin that rivals cosmetic advertising, reinforcing the idea that these are clean, pure solventless products. The Method: From Four Images to Forty This project is the ultimate case study in efficiency. Traditionally, to get three distinct lighting looks (Rembrandt, Butterfly, Beauty Dish) for three different sub-brands, you would need: Three separate set changes. Multiple models with different hair/makeup looks. A 12-hour day burning through budget and patience. With the Maryland Connoisseur Method, we skipped the logistics. A dramatic PuffGo portrait —texture, smoke, and concentrated focus. We took the high-fidelity product shots from our "Bare Bulb" session and composited them into these curated virtual lighting setups. We could place the  Eden Fruit Gushers  jar in a moody, Rembrandt-lit lounge. We could place the  Equity Vape  in a high-energy, Butterfly-lit studio setting. We controlled the reflections. We matched the color grading. We ensured that the "virtual sun" hit the model at the exact same angle our "600w bare bulb" hit the jar in Baltimore. Luxury meets craft —The Alchemist brand identity expressed in gold tones and powerful styling. "A marketing director's dream: We turned a static product library into a dynamic lifestyle campaign without ever booking a second shoot day." Compliance & Creative Testing For an MSO or a large brand house, compliance is the ceiling that limits creativity. The Maryland Connoisseur Method raises that ceiling. Because we are building the image pixel-by-pixel, we have absolute control over Compliance by Design. A beauty-inspired look at The Alchemist’s signature golden concentrate. No Appeal to Minors:  We ensure the styling is strictly adult—sophisticated fashion, mature settings, and "high-art" lighting aesthetics. Packaging Accuracy:  Because the product is a  photo , not a render, the label text is legible and compliant. Furthermore, this method allows for  Rapid A/B Testing . Does the Eden customer respond better to the dark, mysterious "Alchemist" vibe or the bright, pop-color "Fruit Gushers" vibe? We generated both from the same source material. The brand can test the creative, analyze the engagement, and double down on the winner, all before committing to the next physical production. The Business Case: The Alchemist’s ROI Why should a cannabis brand care about virtual lighting patterns? Because the market is saturated with mediocrity. To stand out, your visuals need to look like a production, not a snapshot. Equity Extracts with cinematic presence —bold silhouette, rich shadows, and signature vapor trails. This method offers the  ROI of Alchemy . You pay for one day of clinical, high-precision product photography. You  receive  a season’s worth of lifestyle content that looks like it cost $50,000 to produce. You get the "Glamour," the "Grit," and the "Gold," all derived from a smart, strategic base. Conclusion: Visualizing the Terpenes The Alchemist / Eden / Equity project proves that the future of cannabis photography is hybrid. The purity of solventless , captured through luminous detail and clean composition. By respecting the physics of light: using that 600w bare bulb to capture the truth of the product, and then leveraging the infinite flexibility of virtual production to build the emotion, we created a campaign that feels as potent as the concentrates themselves. We took the base metal of a simple product shot and transmuted it into visual gold. And in this industry, image is the only currency that matters.

  • The Maryland Connoisseur Method: Capturing the Art of the Exhale with Strane Vapes

In the world of cannabis photography , the flower is the easy superstar. It has texture, color, and organic geometry. It loves the camera. But the vape pen? That is a harder sell. To the uninspired lens, a vape cartridge is just a cylinder of glass and metal. It is utilitarian. It is tech. It lacks the romance of a rolling paper or the sparkle of a trichome. So, how do you market a 1-gram vape cartridge without making it look like a USB drive? You don't photograph the object. You photograph the action. Y ou cast vapes as the soundtrack to the modern night out! The Hipster Creative in motion, stealth luxury meets neon atmosphere, turning the exhale into pure visual rhythm. For this virtual test shoot with  Strane , we tackled their line of high-potency 1G vapes. We knew that a static product shot wouldn't cut it. We needed to visualize the stealth, the portability, and the immediate satisfaction of the hit. We needed the Art of the Exhale with Strane Vapes. We call this concept "The Vape Portrait." Backstage Alt-Rock energy, heavy vapor sculpted around attitude, giving the Strane vape the weight of a guitar riff. Using the  Maryland Connoisseur Method , we froze time at the exact moment of the exhale—turning vapor clouds into compositional art and proving that vapes are the ultimate accessory for the modern, alt-rock lifestyle. "A vape pen sitting on a table is just a battery. A vape pen in use is a vibe. We stopped shooting the hardware and started shooting the feeling." Stealth luxury personified, the late-night hit captured at the exact moment the world softens and the vibe sharpens. The Challenge: The Invisible Made Visible The fundamental problem with marketing vapes is that the magic is invisible. The oil sits still. The battery does nothing until you inhale. To make the viewer "feel" the product, we had to master the element of  Volumetric Atmosphere , or, as we call it in the studio, "The Cloud." In traditional photography, smoke is a nightmare. It moves too fast, it covers the model’s face, or it looks wispy and weak. In our hybrid virtual workflow, we treat the vapor as a sculpture. A moving portrait carved from vapor and grit. The Strane vape as the modern accessory of calm between the chaos. We composed the clouds to wrap around the subject, framing the face rather than obscuring it. We lit the vapor from behind with neon rim lighting to give it weight and texture. We turned the exhale into a physical manifestation of the "head change." Decoding the Aesthetic: Hipster, Alt-Rock, and Stealth Luxury Strane isn't a brand for the faint of heart. It has a grit to it. It’s the band playing the dive bar, not the orchestra playing the hall. To match this energy, we developed three distinct "Vape Portrait" personas. 1. The Backstage Alt-Rock This is the core Strane aesthetic. We placed virtual models in leather jackets, band tees, and distressed denim against brick walls and dark, club-like voids. The exhale becomes the stage fog , Strane’s vapor sculpted into a mood only the nightlife crowd understands. The Vibe:  It’s 2 A.M. after the show. The adrenaline is fading, and you need that specific hit of calm. The Composition:  The vape here is a tool of the trade. It’s held casually, almost like a guitar pick or a microphone. The smoke is thick and heavy, mimicking stage fog. 2. The Hipster Creative Vapes are the preferred tool of the creative class because they are clean. No ash, no smell, no mess. The Hipster Creative , clean styling, intentional calm, and a cloud shaped to reveal focus instead of hiding it. The Styling:  We styled these portraits with oversized glasses, beanies, and statement jewelry. The lighting is moodier, more cinematic. The Narrative:  This is the artist taking a break outside the gallery. The vape is part of their uniform, as essential as their smartphone. 3. Stealth Luxury One of the biggest selling points of a vape is  Portability . You can take it anywhere. We visualized this by placing models in "transition" spaces, city streets at night, rooftops, and neon-lit alleyways. Stealth luxury illuminated , the Strane vape as the quiet spark behind a night that feels cinematic. The Look:  Sleek silhouettes, metallic fabrics, and an air of mystery. The vape is small enough to be hidden, but powerful enough to change the night. "The Cloud isn't pollution; it's the visual hero. It’s the only way to photograph 'relief' without using words." The Composition: Framing the "Hit" Creating a "Vape Portrait" requires a specific compositional discipline. If you just have someone blowing smoke at the camera, you lose the connection. Alt-Rock authenticity, brick walls, band tees, and a cloud shaped like a chorus hook. Strane in its natural habitat. We utilized a technique called "The Reveal." We positioned the vapor clouds to drift  away  from the eyes (most of the time), or to curl around the jawline. We used the cloud to create "negative space" that draws the viewer’s attention back to the vape pen itself. The Grip:  We paid close attention to how the hand interacts with the device. It’s not a tight fist; it’s a delicate, tactile hold. The fingers act as leading lines, pointing the viewer directly to the Strane logo. The Eyes:  In every shot, the model’s eyes are the focal point. They communicate the effect of the strain—relaxed, focused, or euphoric—while the cloud provides the context. The Backstage persona , texture, attitude, and vapor thick enough to feel like stage smoke. The Method: Hybrid Fluidity This shoot reinforces why the  Maryland Connoisseur Method  is the future of cannabis content. We started by photographing the Strane 1G Vape hardware in the studio. We captured the matte finish of the mouthpiece and the gloss of the cartridge with macro precision. The hardware behind the haze , minimalist, portable, and designed for the modern night out. Then, we built the atmosphere. Trying to get a model to blow the  perfect  smoke ring on a physical set can take 500 frames and three hours. In our virtual environment, we can sculpt the smoke. We can decide that the cloud needs to be 10% more opaque or move two inches to the left to reveal a cheekbone. The Backstage Alt-Rock archetype: sculpted vapor wrapping the face, attitude sharpened by color and texture. We combined the real hardware with the digital human and the simulated fluid dynamics of the smoke. The result is an image that looks like a high-budget fashion editorial, achieved with zero lung fatigue. The Business Case: Why "Vape Portraits" Sell Why should an MSO care about artful smoke? Because the vape market is crowded. Every brand has a cart. To win the shelf, you have to sell the Lifestyle of Convenience. Consumers choose vapes because they are easy, discreet, and fast. Stealth Luxury in motion : Strane in the wild, where neon edges carve the vapor into its own light source. Portability:  Our images show the vape in the wild—on the street, in the club, reinforcing that this product goes where you go. Cool Factor:  By styling the shoot with an "Alt-Rock/Hipster" edge, we move the product away from "medicine" and into " fashion accessory." "We aren't hiding the model behind the smoke; we are revealing the feeling through it. It’s intimate, it’s kinetic, and it’s cool." Refined rebellion: a vape portrait blending velvet, gold, and perfectly sculpted smoke. The Art of The Exhale with Strane Vapes - Conclusion: The Smoke Show The  Strane Vape Portrait  series proves that you don't need a flower macro to make a beautiful cannabis image. By focusing on the "Art of the Exhale", the texture of the vapor, the attitude of the model, and the lighting of the cloud, we turned a piece of hardware into a moment of pure vibe. Vapes are cool. They are stealthy. They are the soundtrack to the modern night out. It’s time the photography caught up to the technology.
