The Art of Illumination: Capturing Evermore's Red Zushi Live Rosin for Maryland Leaf Magazine

Updated: 2 days ago

In the rapidly evolving world of cannabis, visual representation isn't just about showing a product; it's about telling a story, conveying quality, and evoking desire. As a dedicated cannabis photographer and videographer, my mission is to elevate brands through compelling imagery.

Recently, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Maryland Leaf Magazine to capture the exquisite Red Zushi Cold Cure Live Rosin from Evermore Cannabis Company – a shoot that allowed us to push the boundaries of product photography with a highly stylized approach.

Magazine spread from Maryland Leaf Magazine, November 2025 issue, featuring a photograph of Evermore Cannabis Company's Red Zushi Cold Cure Live Rosin. The spread includes product details, terpene profile, and editorial text describing the concentrate's quality.
Showcasing the full feature spread! It’s an honor to be the trusted visual partner for great brands like Evermore Cannabis Company. The sharp, clean photography captured the essence of their celebrated Red Zushi Cold Cure Live Rosin, demonstrating how bare bulb lighting can create the ultimate premium look for concentrates.

Setting the Scene: The Challenge of Cannabis Photography

Cannabis products, especially concentrates like live rosin, present unique challenges. Their textures, subtle color variations, and often delicate forms require meticulous lighting and composition to truly shine. The goal is to move beyond generic, clinical shots and instead create visuals that are artful, intriguing, and above all, authentic to the product's premium nature.

For the Red Zushi Live Rosin, we aimed for a look that was bold, dramatic, and emphasized the product's luxurious texture and the brand's sophisticated identity. This meant moving away from soft, diffused lighting and embracing a technique that would sculpt shadows and highlight form.

The Bare Bulb & Scrim Method: Sculpting Light and Shadow

To achieve the distinctive high-contrast, hard shadow aesthetic you see, we employed a specialized lighting technique centered around a bare bulb setup paired with strategic scrims.

  • The Bare Bulb Foundation: Unlike a light source fitted with a diffuser or softbox, a bare bulb (or an uncovered strobe head) emits a very harsh, directional light. This is the raw power of illumination, capable of creating incredibly defined edges and intense highlights. While often avoided in conventional product photography for its unforgiving nature, in skilled hands, it becomes a powerful tool for dramatic effect.

  • The Role of Scrims: If the bare bulb is the sculptor, the scrims are the chisels. A scrim is a translucent material used in photography and cinematography to modify light. In this case, instead of diffusing the light to make it softer (as a softbox would), we used scrims strategically to control the fall-off and shape the shadows. By placing scrims at precise distances and angles relative to the bare bulb and the product, we were able to:

    • Define Edges: Sharpen the outlines of the rosin jar and its cap, giving them a sculptural quality.

    • Create Dynamic Shadows: The hallmark of this shoot – the crisp, elongated shadows that slice across the frame. These aren't accidental; they are carefully orchestrated elements of the composition, adding depth, drama, and a sense of luxury.

    • Accentuate Texture: The interplay of stark light and deep shadow is phenomenal for revealing the nuanced, creamy texture of the cold cure live rosin itself. You can almost feel its consistency just by looking at the image.

This meticulous dance between raw light and controlled obstruction resulted in images that are not just photographs, but pieces of visual art, perfectly suited for the pages of Maryland Leaf Magazine.

The Red Zushi Experience: A Product Worth Highlighting

Evermore Cannabis Company's Red Zushi Cold Cure Live Rosin is not just any concentrate. It's a product celebrated for its quality, unique terpene profile, and the artisanal "cold cure" process that lends it its distinct, cake-batter-like consistency. When a product has such inherent excellence, the photography must rise to meet it. Our lighting choices aimed to mirror the product's premium status – bold, refined, and captivating.

Evermore's Red Zushi Live Rosin - Beyond the Lens: The Impact for Cannabis Brands

In today's competitive cannabis market, visual branding is paramount. For multi-state operators (MSOs) and leading brands, consistent, high-quality photography and videography are not luxuries; they are necessities for:

Whether it’s capturing the intricate trichomes of a flower, the glistening purity of a concentrate, or the sleek design of packaging, every detail matters. The goal is to create imagery that speaks volumes, telling the brand's story long before a customer ever experiences the product firsthand.
